What to do when you are worried for someone else

If someone around you shows signs that they struggle with their mental health be there for them.

Show support

Be kind and understanding.

Search for the empathy and compassion you hold within.

Avoid being reactive in response to their behaviour.

Look to understand what might happen in their inner world.

Aim to build trust and connection.

Talk to them

Listen.

Suspend your judgement.

Accept their experience as their reality.

Tell them they are not alone.

Ask them what does it have to change to make them feel better.

Encourage them to reach out for professional support

Empower them to believe there is support for them out there.

Ask them what help have they tried already.

Remind them of other people going through similar struggles.

Tackle the stigma surrounding a mental health problem.

Share success stories of people that have managed to overcome their struggles.
